Damasio's research on VMPFC-damaged patients demonstrates that emotional states significantly influence and often precede deliberative decision-making — meaning affective signals interact with, rather than oppose, rational evaluation. Sirgy's self-congruity theory, published in the Journal of Consumer Research and replicated extensively, demonstrates that purchase intention is highest when a brand's perceived image is congruent with the consumer's self-concept. Escalas and Bettman extend this to reference groups: ideal self-congruity — the match between brand image and who the consumer aspires to become — drives the strongest purchase intention in aspirational categories. Cialdini's identification principle — among the most replicated findings in social psychology — demonstrates that social proof is most powerful when the observer identifies with the source.
